The history of La Morena Restaurant & Cantina in El Paso, Texas, is tied to owner Frank Mares Jr., who changed the name from Leo’s Mexican Restaurant to La Morena in 2016 to unify his two restaurants under one brand. He also changed the name of his East Side restaurant, La Terraza, to La Morena. The downtown location at 315 E. Mills Ave. later closed in 2017 due to street construction, a pending rent increase, and slowed business, with employees transferred to other locations.
