Dairy Queen began in 1940 when John and Alex McCullough partnered with Sherb Noble to open the first store in Joliet, Illinois, after developing a soft-serve ice cream formula in 1938. The company rapidly expanded through franchising, with the first international store opening in Canada in 1953. Key developments include the introduction of the Dilly Bar in 1955, the Brazier food concept in 1957, and the wildly popular Blizzard® Treat in 1985.
